Weddings have a lot of moving parts, but what vendors do you actually need on your day?
Spoiler alert… if you have the budget for it, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL! There is a reason wedding vendors are called professionals in their industry and it goes without saying, your life will be easier if you hire a professional. But, we totally understand and recognize that not everyone has a massive budget to spend on every vendor. In this episode, we go over the most popular wedding vendors with the pros and cons of hiring either a professional for the day or if you could DIY their role instead. We talk about videographers, coordinators, DJs, Florists, Hair & Makeup, and Caterers.
So which vendors should be non-negotiable and which ones could you DIY?
Videographers – We may be biased but you should probably have someone there to film your wedding day. Video captures something that a photo can’t, and most people only have one wedding day their entire lives, so to us, it’s important that that is captured the best way that it can. Even if you have to hire a film student who is just starting their career in weddings, we think it is worth every penny.
Coordinators – We would argue that this job is a non-negotiable. Finding someone who is a neutral, third-party professional, will guarantee that all of the money you are spending on your wedding day won’t go to waste. If you don’t have a coordinator, your photographer will become the coordinator and your photos will pay the price.
DJ – Is crossfading songs on Spotify going to be as good as hiring a DJ? Welllll, not exactly. When thinking about your wedding day, many couples only think about the dance floor and seem to forget about the ceremony audio and even your toasts. Who’s going to run the microphone? Who’s going to check the frequencies and decibel level to ensure everything sounds okay? Who’s going to run the reception and make sure everything runs on time, announcing which tables can go eat dinner at the buffet? If you ask us, a DJ is an absolute no-brainer to have at your wedding.
Florists – Florals might be one of the most shockingly expensive vendors and decorations you’ll find when planning your wedding. A lot of people do not understand all of the hard work and creativity it takes to become a good florist. We’ve seen some absolutely breathtaking floral arrangements in our time in the wedding industry, but we’ve also seen some weddings where the bride has DIYed all the florals and it looks amazing! Overall, if you decide to DIY your florals, set your expectations low. You are not a professional, but can save a few bucks if you need to by doing them yourself!
Hair & Makeup – Can you do your own hair and makeup? I mean, most people can! But if you have the money for it, we say get it professionally done. The morning of weddings can be hectic and adding the stress of doing your own hair and makeup on your day might not be the best idea. If you want your makeup to last the entire day and look flawless on the dance floor at 10pm – hire a professional.
Catering – Every wedding has food catered, but does that caterer come with someone to bus the tables? Or bartend? Some things to think about when you decide what food to have at your wedding. Sure a taco guy might be the best food we’ve ever had at a wedding, but who’s cleaning the tables after everyone’s done?
Overall, if you are going to DIY a good portion of your wedding, plan for some more stress on yourself and on your loved ones. Weddings are a lot of work and it takes a team to run them smoothly, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done!
